If bad roads are shown on TV daily, why not Abim Hospital?

A letter from the Abim District Chief Administrative Officer to three staff of the hospital threatening disciplinary proceedings following Dr Kizza Besigye’s recent visit to the hospital, will end up transforming the medical staff into heroines. It is true as the CAO argues in his letter that the civil servants signed an oath of secrecy and allegiance and they should not have revealed unauthorised information.

The CAO is actually building a mountain out of a molehill. What is the difference between what was shown on TV in Abim Hospital and the bad roads that have also been televised? Should the entire UNRA staff face the sack? Mr CAO, let us not hide under regulations, most of which should have been scrapped decades ago. In your duration as CAO, what have you done to revamp the hospital at a micro level? The district has a chairperson, RDC and CAO all superintending on the same geographical zone and yet it took the visit of Besigye for the country to learn that the hospital has not had a doctor for one year.

I do not wish to advise the CAO to resign but it should have been the most honourable thing to do because health is a right. There is no doubt government has built thousands of health centres across the country and just one or two hospitals in a bad shape should not end up incriminating the medical staff. In any case, there are other achievements in Abim that have been realised by this government. The three medical staff and others that work in this hospital actually need a revamp of the hospital so that they operate in hygienic working conditions.
