Kilembe mines sacks 10 workers

Kasese. Ten employees of Tibet Hima, a Chinese company managing Kilembe Mines, have been sacked for allegedly discussing company issues with the press.
The affected employees are accused of speaking to the media about their safety at work following the death of two of their workmates this month.

Victim speaks out
The sacked employees include Mr Matte Kule, who says he fell from a building as he painted one of the structures and sustained injuries, including chest pain. He says he was admitted to Kilembe Mines Hospital for a month.
Mr Kule says he was surprised at the weekend when his supervisor informed him not to continue with his daily duties, allegedly on the instructions from the project manager.
He added that when he tried to consult why he has being expelled from work without notice, they faulted him for speaking to journalists who were following up on the death of his two colleagues.

Claims refuted
However, the project manager Mr Alex Kwatampora, dismissed the allegations that they were dismissed for talking to the press.
“Kule and other colleagues failed the screening tests as they were in the two weeks safety training exercise,” Mr Kwatampora said.
He added that the screening safety training was aimed at selecting employees with the necessary qualification to work in the company as a way to combat death incidents, like they had occurred in the previous days.
