Jinja- Police in Jinja District have started investigating Jinja mayor Muhammad Baswari Kezaala over allegations of assault and defacing of President Museveni’s posters.

Hajj Kezaala is also accused of stealing Shs5.5 million from NRM supporters who were reportedly pinning up Mr Museveni’s posters and those of his rival for the mayor’s seat, Mr Majid Batambuze.

He appeared at Jinja Central Police Station last Thursday and was quizzed for more than two hours in relation to the charges before being released on police bond.

The district police commander, Mr Felix Mugizi, said the mayor recorded a statement pending further investigations.

“We have released him on bond as investigations continue. He will report back on January 4,” Mr Mugizi said.

According to police, NRM supporters accuse Hajj Kezaala of ordering his supporters to assault them on the evening of December 22.

The attack is said to have occurred adjacent to the police station where the mayor has a private office. His accusers also have an office on the same building.

However, Hajj Kezaala described the accusations as “frivolous and absurd”.

Kezaala responds
“First of all, it was them who attacked me and abused me, but I ignored them. How they turn around to say I ordered them to be beaten is laughable,” he told journalists shortly after he was released.

“It is even more laughable that one of them said we stole his money. How do you go pinning posters with such an amount of money?” the mayor added.
