Jinja. Development of tourism sites in Busoga region will continue to lag behind unless people in the region stop bickering.
Mr John Ssempebwa, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), made the comments in Jinja recently at the Crested Crane Hotel during the annual Busoga Convention organised by Busoga Yaiffee, an NGO, where he presented a paper on how to take “Busoga Forward Through Tourism, ICT and Sports Investment”.
UTB had for more than two years failed to identify a partner to champion activities under the Busoga Tourism Cluster due to in-fighting among operators in the sector.
Way forward
The matter was only put to bed late in October this year during a meeting at the Nile Resort Hotel when representatives of among others, NGOs, the media, hoteliers, tour operators and managers of various tourism sites in Busoga, voted to have the Busoga Tourism Initiative (BTI), as the driver of the Busoga Tourism Cluster.
Busoga Tourism Initiative (BTI) which is chaired by the outgoing Kigulu North MP, Mr Edward Kafuufu Baliddawa, has for the last four years popularised the Kagulu hill Climbing Challenge and the Busoga Tourism Expo.
Speaking during the convention, Mr Ssempebwa noted that now that the leadership issue has been resolved, Busoga region is set to benefit from the Shs12 billion that government will soon inject into developing the tourism sector.
