Police hold two Kitgum medics over negligence

In Summary

Absconded. The staff of Okidi Health Centre III refused to show up for work on Christmas Day.

Kitgum. Police in Kitgum District are holding two health workers attached to Okidi Health Centre III in Labongo, Amida Sub-county over negligence of duty.
The health workers were supposed to work on Christmas Day but they instead locked the facility and went for holidays leaving patients stranded.

The suspects, who are currently detained at Kitgum Central Police Station, include a records assistant and a comprehensive nurse.
Kitgum Resident District Commissioner (RDC) William Komakech confirmed the arrest and added that three others who also didn’t turn up for work that day are on the run and police and his office are hunting them down.
Mr Komakech revealed that he was tipped off by the affected residents who told him since the onset of the festive season, the health centre has been closed.

“I am disappointed that these health workers abandoned the facility in the hands of village health team members. Even a traditional birth attendant was left to conduct four deliveries on Boxing Day,” Mr Komakech said.
Kitgum District chief administrative officer Ismael Ochengel decried the health workers’ conduct as inappropriate.
He said recently, the Local Government ministry Permanent Secretary issued a circular which was forwarded to all heads of departments warning all public officers to desist from absenting themselves from work during the festive season.
