Lyantonde health workers strike enters day seven

Lyantonde- A strike by medical workers at Lyantonde Hospital, which enters its seventh day today, has paralysed medical services at the facility, leaving patients in despair.

The health workers laid down their tools last Wednesday after a communication from the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr Christopher Okumu, that their salary arrears will be paid in January next year. Some claim they have not received salaries for five months.

Efforts by district officials to end the strike last week failed after the health workers insisted they will not resume work unless they get their salary arrears.

Last week, a group of staff led by Dr Billy Ssebunya, the hospital Medical Superintendent, stormed Mr Okumu’s office demanding an explanation, but his office was locked.

The Resident District Commissioner, Mr Sulaiman Tiguragara Matojo, later held a meeting with the aggrieved health workers and district officials to resolve the grievances.

But the meeting yielded nothing after the health workers stormed out in protest, accusing the district officials of being incompetent in managing the affairs of the district, including issues of health workers.

However, Mr Okumu confirmed the delays, saying they are working out modalities to ensure the aggrieved health workers receive all their money before January.
