Man gets 35 years for killing UPDF soldier



GULU- The High Court presided over by Lady Justice Elizabeth Nahamya last week sentenced a man to 35 years in jail for killing a UPDF officer.






Francis Ocaya, alias Sunday, had appeared before the High Court and charged with murder.






Prosecution led by Mr Patrick Omia told court that on October 12, 2010, at around 3am, Ocaya and another unidentified man attacked Godfrey Birungi, a UPDF officer while in his house at Keyo before abducting him.






According to prosecution, Birungi’s widow, one Josephine Aceng in the process managed to escape the attackers that later killed her husband.






Court heard that the body of Pte Birungi, who had just returned from the Central African Republic (CAR), was recovered at around 7am, near River Paingo with wounds.






Ocaya and his accomplice are reported to have stolen Shs4.7 million, an ATM card and a mobile phone.






Birungi’s army uniform was found lying some three meters away from where his body was.






A post-mortem report presented before the court indicates that the deceased was stabbed and bled to death.






Love gone sour
In his defence, Ocaya told court that he was former lover to Aceng only to learn that his wife has fallen in love with another man.






Ocaya was subsequently handed a jail term of 35 years. Justice Nahamya , however asked Ocaya to appeal if he is not satisfied with the ruling.
