Unclaimed bodies buried at gunpoint

Nakaseke- Nakaseke Hospital management had to deploy armed guards to secure the cemetery where unclaimed bodies from the hospital were buried.
This follows threats on hospital staff by suspected encroachers on the hospital land.

Part of the cemetery, according to Mr David Ssemakula, the hospital administrator, has been taken over by individuals who claim to own it.

The hospital has been burying unclaimed bodies there since 1974. Mr Ssemakula said so far, 900 unclaimed bodies have been buried on the piece of land.

“We are now using armed police to ensure that the hospital staff who bury the unclaimed bodies are safe. We have received threats from an individual who has now taken over this land claiming that he bought it from Buganda Land Board. We are waiting for a formal communication from the concerned authorities regarding this land,” Mr Ssemakula said recently.

Ms Sarah Nalubowa, who claims ownership of the land, accused the hospital management of trespassing on her land. “I have all the documents regarding its ownership and whoever doubts that should crosscheck with Buganda Land Board,” Ms Nalubowa said by telephone yesterday.
