As the year ends, I am happy to reflect on a number of things hubby and I have been able to do, especially at home. It has also taught me that writing out plans, giving them timelines and making sure someone is in charge of the programme delivers results better.
Funny thing is, this year, we did not make that plan – and it shows.
Although we were able to do a number of home projects, they were done ad-hoc, sometimes affecting our budgets, other times, calling for extra time which was hard to find seeing that we had not planned for it. In the previous years, we have always had a plan and we have been able to do much more in a shorter space and with fewer hurdles.
That said, things were done and we are happy about them. Having completed the chicken house in 2014, we bought chicks and although a few died, the rest survived and we have had a constant supply of eggs and chicken, especially for Sunday lunch, which our daughters love. We have given away some eggs and chicken to family but all round, we have discovered that people are more than willing to pay for what we have. So in 2016, we should take the project a little more seriously, with the aim of making something on the side.
We finally put up the water tank where we collect rainwater from the roof. It amazes me how much we collect. The tank has a capacity of 1,000 litres. With just an hour of moderate rain, the tank fills. In fact, on the days it pours for two hours or more, I feel bad to see so much water going to waste from the outlet when the tank gets full. And I always wonder how much water this country would save if we all collected water – homes, hospitals, schools, companies. It is something hubby and I are passionate about! So putting the tank up was one of the things I was really happy about. We use the water from the tank for laundry, cleaning in and out of the house, and washing dishes. We now use piped water only for cooking and in the bathrooms.
We also spruced up the kitchen. When we were building the house a few years ago, the man we hired to do the kitchen did a runner on us. He just placed the sink, a few boards and then disappeared. He was the only one who cheated us during the building process but it hurt because I was looking forward to a nice kitchen. This year, we worked on it. We did the marble counter, placed shelves and doors for the cabinets, and bought a gas cooker with an oven! The kitchen is now pleasant to work in. There is less clutter and it is always sparkling. Plus, hubby has been doing a lot of grilling of meats on Saturdays and Sundays to our joy!
It feels good to see what we were dreaming of, and planned, come to pass. We still have more to do so the planning for 2016 has already started. May God bless our plans, as well as all of you out there. A great 2016 to everyone!
