Soroti- Peoples Development Party presidential candidate Dr Abed Bwanika has pledged to revive the former Soroti Meat Packers into a vibrant factory to provide market for livestock farmers and jobs to hundreds of unemployed Ugandans.
Addressing a rally at Soroti Independence Gardens on Thursday, Dr Bwanika said the meat packing factory brought in a lot of money [in the 1980s] to the region but since its collapse due to the political turmoil and cattle rustling, poverty has ravaged the area.
He said his government would restock and compensate Teso population with improved cattle breeds, which have high meat yields.
Dr Bwanika said he would make compensation of areas that suffered the brunt of war and cattle rustling a priority in his government.
“When a family is compensated, I see them going to buy cows, building houses and educating their children in university,” he envisioned.
“The records are there in Teso, Lango and Acholi regions. Those records are there for us to know who lost what,” he added.
He called off his other campaigns in Amuria and Kaberamaido districts in order to allow people time to prepare for Christmas and New Year festivities. He said he will resume his campaign tour of Kaberamaido and Amuria in January.
