Décor for your bathroom

Unlike the sittingroom or bedroom décor, bathroom décor becomes a little tricky because first; you are dealing with a highly functional yet small space and two, very moist almost all the time, which limits the lengths you can go. But one can always maneuver through this to come up with a creative and beautiful setup that your family, visitors and your self will love.

The interior
If your bathroom is still under construction or up for renovation, there is a lot you can do with tiling. “Many people don’t pay a lot of attention to tiling as a décor, but tiles have proved to be a basic bathroom décor yet adoptive to that environment. You can always get these in different designs that can be blended or combined to your liking and in different colours. So, that should be your starting point when you think bathroom décor,” Patricia Karugaba Kyazze, an interior designer and managing director, Nina Interiors Limited, says.

But whether you already did a good job when tiling, or not, there is a lot more you can do to lift your bathroom’s face. You could think about putting away your ordinary mirror and replace it with a beautifully designed mirror. “One can as well break the monotony by having it fixed in the wall and framing it inside with a tile design. Mosaic tiles come in handy when doing this. You may play around with colours that either compliment the already existing colour of your bathroom or one that contrasts it,” Karugaba advises. You may also not be able a hung a photo frame around, but you can have a board with some inspirational words hung directly opposite the toilet.

Throw some creativity in the mix
Since we are working within limited space, creativity is needed even with the little things like a tooth brush holder, toilet paper holder, soap dispenser and shower curtain. Your laundry basket too, which can either be plastic, locally made or fabric can be chosen to match the colour themes in your bathroom. You can as well arrange your towels, which can also match your colour theme (by either normally folding them or rolling them) in a way that will make them stand out and gracefully blend into the room. There is also a collection available in furniture shops that comes with a matching toothbrush holder, soap dispenser, shower curtain, and a small mat. You could secure one for your bathroom to get that additional look.

A flower arrangement can be what your bathroom needs, however, Karugaba cautions that live plants/ flowers are the best idea because they can get moisture all through. Watering it also becomes more convenient since water is just a hand stretch away. Remember, however, to carry it outside every once in a while. Artificials can do just as good, however, keep them away from water. You could place them in a vase and have it raised above the ground, or actually placing a designed transparent empty vase in an illuminated area. In addition to these, toilet mats can as well pull off the look. These are also available in different colours and designs just to suit your taste. It can be a five or three-piece set with colours that contrast or compliment your colour themes.

Scents and ambiance
A bad smell can be a turn off, a discomfort not only in the bathroom, but in the entire house. So, keeping your bathroom clean, and having an additional scent will do some good. Karugaba says, “I wouldn’t advise one to only use air freshener, since the scent gets associated with a bad smell. Fresh scents are the way to go, or essential oils like lavender. These keep the place constantly scented and fresh.”
Or else, one can go for potpourri (a mix of dried scented petals or plants) which can be put in a bowl, or tied in a fabric to perfume the room all the time but also as an accessory. You can always add desired scents in the potpourri, but more to that, toilet fragrance balls which also give off a fresh scent can be used.

To enhance ambiance, scented candles are a good idea, however, make sure to blow them out after you are done using the bathroom so they don’t burn out but also that you don’t set your house on fire. Thoughtful lighting is also able to give the desired effect. Colored lights/ bulbs can be used, according to color choice, so that you always look forward to your showers.
