Pastel colours

By Hassan Ssentongo

There is no way you can pick out basic wardrobe essentials and leave out soft hues and muted colours. These are timeless and will last in your wardrobe for as long as you wish.
Pastel colours include soft and washed shades of pink and baby blue among other colours. They give off a calm and sophisticated vibe, what would be called ‘subtle glamour’.

They are also soothing to the eyes. If your style sense depends on the mood, these are the colours to wear on a calm and collected day. You don’t have to wear dark colours to stand out.

Thanks to their soothing effect, the colours are cool to wear to work where you don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself.
Pieces in pastels can easily be repeated, thanks to their understated look. It is also exciting to note that pastels work beautifully with other colour palettes, if they are coordinated right.

Pastels can also be incorporated into your makeup routine with lipstick, nail polish and eye shadow in the colours.
And, yes, pastels are a hot trend right now.

Wardrobe guide
• Pastel with pastel
Wear different pastel colours in one look to create a calm effect.
• One pastel colour head to toe. If it is dress, wear a short one to break the monotony with your skin tone. Yes, your skin can be an accessory here. One tip here, if you are wearing one pastel colour head to toe, keep one of the pieces with a slightly darker shade than the rest of the look.
• Pastel with a neutral Pair your pastel with a colour such as brown to make it pop.
• Nail polish. If you love pastels but aren’t adventurous enough to dive in, go with shades of the colours on your nails. You could vanish each finger nail with a different colour shade for a naughty feel.
• As makeup. You can as well wear it as lipstick. With your dark skin tone, nude lipstick will stand out for a fun look.
• Accesorise. Pastels come in everything from accessories to shoes and bags. A pastel-coloured bag will go with almost everything you own. Shoes in pastel colours can transform any look into a cool ensemble too.

A final tip: Brighten your muted look with bright accessories for an a lot more interesting and edgy look.
