As the first round of the Women Elite League nears completion, last season’s semi-finalists Western United find themselves in a desperate need to register positive results.
The Mbarara side, mostly comprising students of Citizen High School, have been in uninspiring form after losing back-to-back games to Ajax (1-2), when the league resumed after a lull to allow for national elections, and Gafford (1-0).
They now sit sixth, out of eight teams, in Victoria Group and the belief in the team is that constant fixture changes have not allowed them to keep momentum.
“Before the school holidays in December, we had won two games but we struggle to organise a team when we break off,” said team manager Chris Kalibala, who revealed he is not aware they will play their pending fixtures this weekend.
They are expected to camp in Kampala this weekend for matches against third placed She Mak at Makerere and Mutesa I Royal University (4th place) tomorrow before a tricky home encounter against defending champions Kawempe Muslim on March 4.
“But we can and have to catch up now that school has resumed. We play three of the four teams ahead of us, so we can only wait to see when the games are scheduled,” Kalibala added before asserting his team’s destiny is in their own hands.
