Butaleja- Parliamentary losers and the electorate in Butaleja District have asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to be transparent when conducting elections.
Mr Peter Hasahya, a voter, told Daily Monitor they were disappointed in the just concluded presidential and parliamentary elections and that they saw no reason to participate in local council elections when final results did not reflect their choice.
The accusation comes barely two days after some presidential and parliamentary election losers in the country rejected the election results, claiming the exercise was marred by massive irregularities.
The parliamentary losers in the Butaleja District headed by lawyer Yusuf Mutembuli (Independent), who lost the Bunyole East seat to Mr Moses Nagwomu Musamba (NRM), have since protested the results and threatened court action if the EC does not cancel the results.
Another voter, Ms Amina Namudira, said it was the reason why they shunned local council elections. “We are not happy with last week’s presidential and parliamentary election results.
We decided to stay at home and we do our work instead of wasting time on voting,” said Ms Namudira.
According to results obtained from some of the polling stations during local government elections, including Muhoho Polling Station with 778 registered voters, only 107 of them voted. Manafwa Polling Station with 494 voters had only 92 voting.
In Mazimasa Sub-county headquarter Polling station with 856 registered voters ,only 101 of them participated in the exercise.
The regional Election Commission returning officer, Mr Umar Kiyimba said: “It’s always like that when voters finish presidential and parliamentary elections, they tend to relax,” he said.
Mr Richard Waya (NRM) won the Butaleja District chairperson seat with 27,273 votes against 13, 792 votes for incumbent Joseph Muyonjo (Independent) and Mr Amiri Mulongo (Independent ] with 1,611 votes.
