NRM district boss accused of house grabbing

In Summary

Insisted. The NRM chief insists he bought the house but by press time, he had not produced the purchase agreement.

JINJA. The secretary general of NRM party in Jinja District, Mr William Kato Kaziba, has been accused of grabbing a house from a family of six in Igombe Trading Centre, Buwenge Sub-county.
Mr Kaziba, who denies the claims, is also accused of using his influence within NRM to use police in Jinja to intimidate Mr Fred Kiyuba, the owner of the house, who has been arrested for trespass more than 12 times in the last four years.

Eye witnesses told Daily Monitor that the conflict between the two dates back to May 2005 when Mr Kiyuba rented part of the house to Mr Kaziba.
However, in a strange twist of events, on the morning of November 29, 2011, Mr Kaziba together with five police officers, arrested Mr Kiyuba on claims of trespass, saying he had bought the house but Mr Kiyuba had refused to vacate.

At one time on January 11, 2012, according to Mr Wilberforce Mifuba, the area LC1 chairperson, was forced to intervene in a fight, scheduling a meeting later to resolve the matter.
“To my surprise, Mr Kaziba showed up with police officers and tried to arrest (Mr Kiyuba) for alleged house breaking and theft of a sewing machine…,” Mr Mifuga told Daily Monitor.
Mr Kiyuba also claims that his efforts to file a case was frustrated by Kagoma Police Post.

However, the Regional Police Commander, Mr Alex Twebaze, denies the accusation, saying: “… we advised Mr Kiyuba to obtain a court order upon which we can act, but he could not obtain it.”
Mr Kaziba insists he bought the house but could not produce a copy of the purchase agreement as promised. “I am not using my position in the party to grab property. I bought the house from him,” he said.
