The Proverbs 31 man

By Stella Riunga Rop

Many women are secretly annoyed by the fact that the book of Proverbs ended one chapter short. After having learnt of superwoman- elegant, graceful, beautiful, industrious, kind and wise- there is a deep silence on her mate, as if he did not exist.
I know there is a bride-to-be somewhere ready to box the next well-meaning Aunt so-and-so who advises her that her children should rise and call her blessed. Never mind that these children, when they eventually come, will barely rise to say ‘hello’ to a visitor, much less call their mother ‘blessed’.

Well ladies, here he is. The man you’ve all been waiting for. The Proverbs 31 man.

A trustworthy man, who can find?
The heart of his wife rests safely in him.
He turns up when he says he will,
And always picks her calls.
He remembers her birthday,
And knows her name.
He will burn the midnight oil
But not playing sports betting.
He clothes himself with dignity,
And his outfits match too.
He will not embarrass her in public
Or call her Mama Toto.
He will hold her hand,
Proudly and confidently,
In front of and behind closed doors.
He opens his hand to the poor,
And doesn’t complain about it endlessly.
He takes a loan
And repays it speedily.
He opens his mouth with wisdom
But not at the bar.
He will pick up the baby
And soothe her to sleep.
He can wash the dishes
And still remain a man.
He consults his wife
And then makes an investment.
His friends are few and well chosen,
He steers far from the path of fools.
He gets into a traffic jam
And keeps his cool.
He will not smear her photos endlessly
On Instagram and Facebook.
He has better things to do,
Like read a book.
His mind, like his face,
Is the most attractive thing of all.
He never overpromises,
Only to underdeliver.
He knows that he is not Prince Charming
Or even his distant cousin.
His wife rises in the family meeting
And calls him blessed.
Cheers to the Proverbs 31 Men in our midst.
