Kabale students strike over Arsenal game, one shot dead

By Robert Muhereza

A senior five student of St Mary’s Rushoraza in Kabale town was on Sunday evening shot dead by the police as they tried to calm the striking students of the same school that attempted to riot.

The senior three students found the senior six ones occupying “their” front seat in the main hall as they were preparing to watch the football match between Arsenal and Liverpool. This erupted into a fight and eventually a riot.

The police spokesman for Kigezi sub region, Mr Elly Maate, said the incident happened between 6 and 7pm at the school campus on Rushoroza hill and identified the deceased as Allan Ntunguka, 19. He also said that they were hunting for the police officer that committed the offence because he abandoned his gun at Rushoroza police post where he has been attached.

Mr Maate identified the accused policeman as 59592, Job Musawo, attached to Rushoroza police post Kabale Municipality.

“The school administration called the police to calm the situation because students were rioting and fighting each other. On arrival, the police shot in the air to disperse and scare them but because the policemen were shooting while in the valley and the rioting students were on raised ground, a stray bullet hit one of the students in the chest and he died moments later after admission at Kabale regional referral hospital. It’s an unfortunate incident,” Mr Maate said.

He warned the students against such violent strikes and advised policemen to always take the necessary precaution as they handle such incidents.

The school head teacher Mr Remegio Byamukama confirmed that the incident happened at his school. He also stated that the situation is now normal as classes were going on. Burial arrangements were being made to transport the deceased to his home in Nyaruhanga Rubanda district.
