What you need to know about Misoprostol

This week, we are going to look at a drug called misoprostol. This drug is branded as Cytotec although there are many other brands on the market. This drug was originally given to people with stomach ulcers, otherwise called gastric ulcers and another type called duodenal ulcers. There are certain painkillers called NSAIDs like diclofenac, ibuprofen, among others.

These, through their action, prevent the formation of mucus which protects the stomach lining. This then exposes the stomach lining to the action of acid produced which then results in wounds/ulceration. It is said that misoprostol is recommended to prevent ulcers associated with these NSAIDs and is recommended for the frail or very elderly.

However, this drug is not recommended for women of child bearing age because it has abortive effects. If it is to be given for the management of ulcers, the woman should be put on contraceptives.
Often, Misoprostol comes as 200mcg tablets. The drug is associated with various adverse effects and should only be given out on prescription.

The drug is also associated with diarrhoea which might even be severe and require withdrawal of the drug. Rashes, dizziness, abdominal pain, dyspepsia (painful, difficult or disturbed digestion accompanied by heartburn, bloating, flatulence (stomach gas), nausea and vomiting are also associated with the drug.
A lot could go wrong with this drug, including death. It is imperative that pharmacies dispense this drugs only on prescription.
