Body of ex-minister Wanume Kibedi arrives in Uganda

ENTEBBE: A sombre mood Wednesday engulfed Entebbe international airport as relatives of the late Wanume Joshua Kibedi, including his cousin, the second Deputy Prime Minister Kirunda Kivejinja received his body which arrived at 1:50 pm aboard Emirates airline.
Kibedi, a former minister of foreign affairs in ex-president Idi Amin’s government died on June 13 at St Thomas hospital in London.






Mr. Zaake Wanume Kibedi a younger brother to the deceased while addressing press stated that the deceased “Was a big hearted person who loved his country; was very professional, disciplined and organized because up to now wherever he has served, he has left a good mark both at home and away. He always forwarded good debates and advocacy to put the image of Uganda straight wherever he served.”






Zaake further stated that his elder brother was a mentor, who together with Kivejinja gave him a three day induction training on how to carry on the mantle of an ambassador when he was appointed as Uganda’s ambassador to the Nordic countries.
Mr Kivejinja while addressing press stated said “the late Wanume has been a comrade of our generation who has fought for the aspiration of our people and Africans as a whole.”
Kirunda further stated that Museveni is expected to attend the deceased’s burial over the weekend.






Kibedi who was a lawyer by profession was appointed minister by the late former President of Uganda Idi Amin Dada at the age of 27 years.
He attended Mwiri primary and Secondary Schools after which he proceeded to Makerere University where he studied law.
After his resignation from the Amin administration, he went to New York, from where he practiced law and in 1986 was appointed as the first permanent Ugandan representative in New York by President Museveni.






Kibedi is survived by two widow Elizabeth Kibedi and Rose Kibedi and six children.
Mr. Conrad Nkuutu a cousin to the deceased said the first funeral service for the deceased will be held on Thursday at 10am at All Saints church Kampala and another on Friday at 10am in Jinja at Bugembe Cathedral.
The deceased will be laid to rest on Saturday at 2pm, at Nabitende village, Namalemba Sub-county in Iganga district.
