Government closes Sango bay camp, shifts refugees

Rakai- Government has closed Sango Bay Resettlement Camp in Rakai District and started relocating more than 5,000 returnees to Kyegegwa District.

The exercise, which started last Friday, is expected to take 10 days to enable all returnees move with their property.

According to Mr Fred Mugamba, the camp commandant, the group was being moved to Kyaka I Refugee camp in Kyegegwa as earlier communicated by the Office of the Prime Minister.
Mr Mugamba said the relocation was a good move because the conditions at Sango Bay were excruciating.

“I am really happy that these people are finally getting somewhere to settle permanently. I have offered them three cows to feast as we bid farewell to them,” he said on Saturday.

“Given the anguish we endured since 2013, more than 25 people, including both children and mothers died due to hunger and lack of proper medical care in the camp,’’ Mr Mugambi added.

The returnees were expelled from Tanzania in 2013 over illegal entry. Government decided to temporarily resettle them at Sango bay.
