Magistrate to visit Besigye in prison

Nakawa Court Chief Magistrate James Ereemye has said he will visit jailed Forum for Democratic Change former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye in Luzira prison where he’s being held over treason charges.
Mr Eremye Wednesday said judiciary was concerned by Dr Besigye’s rights abuse concerns and he will visit Luzira prison next week.
“Iit’s high time I visited Luzira Prison to address your (Besigye’s) concerns and the concerns of other inmates. I will be doing this early next week,” he said.
His remarks came after Dr Besigye told court that his rights are being violated at Luzira Prison.

Besigye told court that as a political leader, he tried to send out a Ramadhan messages but he was informed that he doesn’t have that right.
“I thought I am innocent until proven guilty but I’m being treated as a guilty person by Prison authorities,” Besigye said.
He also asked court to give a timeframe within which state should conclude its investigations in the treason charges against him.
In response to this, the magistrate agreed with Besigye saying the state should expedite its investigations.
“ By this time round, the investigations must be complete. Be mindful that the accused is entitled to expeditious trial. I’m adjourning this matter for the last time,” said the magistrate before adjourning the case to July 13.
