ADJUMANI- Authorities in Adjumani District have banned commercial sale of charcoal as a way of mitigating the after effects of deforestation.
The decision was made during a recent district executive committee meeting with members agreeing that effective July, there will be no renewal and issuing of new permits for transporting charcoal out of the district.
Mr James Leku, the Adjumani District chairperson said large chunk of forest cover have been destroyed without replacement, leaving the environment at risk.
“The district executive committee has temporarily outlawed commercial charcoal business until further notice” Mr Leku said, advising residents to embark in agricultural activities rather than charcoal burning, which he said poses a big threat to the environment.
Mr Francis Ojja, the Adjumani District forest officer, said all commercial charcoal traders have been given a deadline of up to June 30 to dispose-off charcoal still in their possession or risk making loses.
“We halted commercial charcoal trade. We want to give them more time to come up with best strategies in regulating production and trade in forest products” he said, highlighting the rampant illegal charcoal trade in the sub-counties of Ofua, Ukusijoni, Arinyapi and Itirikwa.
