290 students suspended over strike

Soroti- At least 292 students of Church of Uganda Vocational Institute in Soroti District have been suspended indefinitely over their role in a violent strike at the institute on Sunday night.

The school founded by Church of Uganda admits boys and girls pursuing technical education in mechanics, driving, brick laying and concrete practice, among other courses.

Canon Patrick Ouke, the chairperson board of governors, on Monday told Daily Monitor that the destruction of the institute’s property prompted the suspension.

“As a committee, we resolved to send these students back to their parents because they all refused to comply when asked to state their problems,” Canon Ouke said, adding that the students destroyed office glasses, suggestion boxes, and the main gate, among others.

Sources at the school indicate that the students became wild after some of their colleagues were punished after allegedly being found sleeping in the girl’s dormitory.

Mr Julius Apedu, the principal, said according to the institute’s regulations, boys are not supposed to cross to girls rooms at any time not even during the day.

“We have not been able to formally write letters to their parents because of limited time but we are going to make a general radio announcement to inform the students’ parents of the suspension,” Mr Apedu said, adding that within two weeks, the students shall be called back.

However, some students who did not want their identities revealed explained that the school administration does not listen to their problems.

“We destroyed the school propert because the principal invented his own allegations that our colleagues were seen at the girls’ hostel when it was completely wrong information,” they explained.
