Otim confident Cranes will pass Rwanda test

In Summary

In the opening fixture at 5pm, Kenya will play Burundi, a game that will be equally vital for newly appointed Kenyan coach Geoffrey Omondi

KIGALI. If there is a team the Volleyball Cranes believe they can defeat but never get to do so, then that team is Rwanda.
Uganda lost to Rwanda in three straight sets two years ago during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in addition to the 3-1 loss during the 2011 All Africa Games qualifiers.

Today, that friendly foe fire will be reignited at the Amahoro Sports Complex as the Zone V All Africa Games Qualifiers commence.
“They (Rwanda) are a side we can match,” said Uganda’s skipper Dickens Otim. “In the past they have won because they are the better prepared side, but we have equally had good preparations coming here.”
Without Christopher Mukunzi, who will be missing the qualifiers because of a wrist injury, Rwanda will be captained by Ugandan-born Lawrence Yakan.

“It’s always emotional playing against your native country, but I have a job to do and that’s to make sure Rwanda qualifies for the All Africa Games,” said Yakan said.
