JINJA: Police in Jinja District are holding two of their own in connection with the death of a suspect.
The suspect, Twaha Hasakya, died last Wednesday in the cells at Walukuba Police Station on the outskirts of Jinja Town after allegedly being tortured.
Two other suspects, who are said to have been tortured along with the deceased, have since been admitted to Jinja Hospital where they are being treated for injuries.
The three were arrested last week from Kikondo village in Nyenga Sub- county, Buikwe District, in connection with the theft of a Marine Police boat engine from Rippon Falls landing site in Jinja.
The trio are said to have been transferred to Walukuba Police Station where they were reportedly tortured by the duo in order to extract information from them.
Attempted cover up
The Nyenga Sub-county chairman, Mr Yosiah Kyazze, claimed the duo attempted to hide the body before they finally dumped it in Jinja Hospital.
The Kiira region police spokesperson, Mr Samson Lubega, confirmed the arrest of the officers on Thursday, saying they are being held at Jinja Central Police Station.
“They could have failed to apply the required level of professionalism in the execution of their duties, leading to the torture of the suspect who died at their hands,” he said.
The crime
