Soccer. The Azam Premier League top scorer told this paper that he was approached by someone demanding for Shs300,000 in exchange for his passport
URA striker Robert Ssentongo, was on Wednesday, one of the players summoned to the Cranes provisional squad that will start preparations for next month’s Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
His return marks a forgettable two months for the pint-sized striker, who missed out as the Cranes won their 14th Cecafa title, after failing to trace his passport in time before the team flew out to Addis Ababa for the tourney.
Having staked Shs500,000 to whoever would return it to him, the player claims to have been contacted by an unknown person who asked for only Shs300,000.
“Banange mwebale kusaba, passport yange njifunye,” he posted on his Facebook account, eight days back, in a message that can be loosely translated as; “Thanks for your prayers, I got my passport back.”
Fufa, through national teams’ coordinator Patrick Ntege, told this paper before the Cecafa tournament that the player was solely responsible for the whereabouts of his travel document.
Ssentongo, meanwhile, insisted he had left his passport with the federation after a Cranes game, a one-all draw against Tanzania, back in July.
The striker leads the Azam Premier League scoring charts with nine goals at the halfway stage despite missing four of the team’s 15 games thus far.
His off-the-field lifestyle has also seen him on a collision course with Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic and club tactician Kefa Kisala, with the player dropped most recently for the goalless draw against Maroons, eight days ago.
