Fisheries officer sentenced, fined

Kampala. The Anti-Corruption Court on Thursday sentenced the fisheries officer in Kalangala District to a fine of Shs4m for abuse of office and receiving a bribe of Shs1.7m.
Elias Tusiime, a fisheries officer for Mugoye Sub-county, received the bribe from three fishermen from Mwenza Island.

“If you fail to pay the court fine, you will serve one-and-a half years in prison, on top of barring you from holding any public office for a period of 10 years,” Chief Magistrate Agnes Alum ruled upon convicting Tusiime.
The magistrate at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala also ordered Tusiime to refund the Inspectorate of Government Shs1.7m which was used to trap him.

Ms Alum said evidence showed that Tusiime received the bribe from the fishermen to spare their illegal fishing nets and fishing boats.
Prosecution said the fishermen had been arrested by Tumiime on account that they were using illegal nets to catch premature fish and vowed to destroy the fishing nets and boats. However, when they pleaded with him, he demanded a bribe.
They contacted the Inspector General of Government’s office for help and a trap was set up for Tusiime.
