Mbarara- With two titles in a row, Duncan ‘Kikankane’ Mubiru, is undoubtedly the driver to beat in the Lato Milk Mbarara Rally.
Mubiru, in a Subaru N14, is going for a hat-trick but faces stiff competition from Evo X ‘Ebisodde’ drivers Ronald Ssebuguzi, Jas Mangat, Desh Kananura, Nasser Mutebi and Rauf Adam in the two-day event climaxing this afternoon.
In the past, the winner of the Mbarara event coasted to the National Rally Championship (NRC) title but the last three years proved different.
Kikankane (2014, 2015) and Ponsiano Lwakataka (2013) failed to follow up their triumphs in Mbarara with the NRC title. Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge (2011) and Mangat (2012) were the last drivers to win in Mbarara and claim the national title at the end of the season.
Crucially, the main focus today will be on the clash between Subaru cars and Mitsubishi Evo drivers.
Meanwhile, Deo Ssembatya, the in-charge of safety, has appealed to fans to keep off the rally route as the cars are expected to be very fast. “Apart from CS3-Biharwe (24.40km) which is slippery after rain this week, the rest of the route is flat. Fans should keep off the route,” he said.
During the launch of the event early this month, Andrew Sorowen, the assistant inspector general of police in charge of general duties, warned Subaru group drivers and rally fans to observe traffic rules.
