Kasese wealth creation cattle die

Kasese- Hardly four months since government donated 117 exotic dairy cows to Kasese District, 17 of the cows have reportedly died under unclear circumstances.

The friesian cows that were given to farmers in Kasese District on October 16, 2015, under the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) programme, were distributed to farmers in all sub-counties of the district.

Sources told this newspaper that the cows started dying two weeks after the distribution.

The cause
Farmers whose cows died blamed the death of the animals on harsh conditions. “We were given poor quality animals that were not resistant to our harsh conditions.

On top of that they were not healthy as earlier stated when they were delivered,” Mr Kefa Bwambale of Kyabayenze village, Kisolholo parish in Karambi Sub-county, said.

Mr Yofesi Isebanghasa, another farmer in Bulimi village Kilembe Sub-county, claimed the district technical staff never provided the technical advice on how to look after the cows.

No explanation
The spokesperson of OWC in the district, Maj Barnabas Muwongo, confirmed the death of the animals but could not give details surrounding the incidents.
