Leaders want ban on night clubs over death of pupil in new year fracas

Maracha. Leaders in Maracha want to ban night clubs in the district after a fracas at a New Year festival in Agai trading centre in Oluvu Sub-county led to the death of one person and left several others injured. The body of Robert Akama, 16, a Primary Six pupil of Galia Primary School, was found dumped on the compound of All Saints secondary school, about 300 meters from the trading centre.
The injured have been admitted to Maracha hospital.

According to eye witnesses, fighting broke outside a night club when some participants were locked in. The issue became violent and fighting spilled over to the streets.

At the burial of the pupil last Sunday at Nikia village, many people blamed the local leaders for allowing night clubs to operate in the sub-county.

However, no sub-county leader was present at the burial.
Mr Amos Adaku, a relative of the deceased, said the postmortem report from Maracha Hospital indicated that the boy was injured with a sharp object on the head. The victim also suffered internal bleeding leading to his death.

Ms Milka Adiru, the head teacher of Galia Primary School, said they lost a student who was a promising sportsman. She said he had represented the district at a number of sports events and excelled. “We are not happy of the rampant organisation of disco dances in the sub-county. The mind of our people is not on development. The sub-county leadership should not wait for a decision from the government but should pass our own by-laws and implement them to keep our children safe,” she said.

Mr Kasiano Tiabayo, the catechist who presided over the burial ceremony condemned the barbaric act saying it is drug abuse by the youth that is causing immoral behaviour. The police said no suspect has been arrested yet.
