Ex-minister, family perish in car crash



GULU. A former Health minister and three family members died instantly at the weekend after a vehicle they were travelling in overturned on Gulu-Kampala highway.
The accident occurred at St Thomas More in Bobi Sub-county, about 32 kilometres south of Gulu Town when the front tyre of the Super Custom van, UAU 249K burst.






Police identified the victims as Dr Henry Benjamin Obonyo, as former minister of industry and later on health in the short-lived government of president Tito Okello Lutwa. His wife Kevin Obonyo and their two daughters only identified as Elizabeth and Majorine also died in the crash.






Two of their grandchildren identified as Annabel Lugon and Gabriela Lugon are admitted to Lacor Hospital in Gulu in critical condition.
Mr Washington Labeja, the traffic officer at Gulu Central Police Station, said the front tyre of the vehicle burst and the vehicle overturned several times. The vehicle was towed to Gulu Central Police Station.
He said the driver of the special hire vehicle from Kampala survived.






The bodies of the dead were taken to Gulu Referral Hospital mortuary.
Dr Obonyo, who lives in London, was travelling with his family to his home village in Madi-Opei in Lamwo District.
The chairperson Madi-Opei community in Gulu District, Mr Esau Langoya, expressed deep shock over the death of Dr Obonyo and his family. He regretted the incident, saying arrangements were underway to take the remains for burial.
