Floods displace 20 families, five schools

Kasese: At least five schools and 20 homesteads in Karusandara Sub-county in Kasese District have been displaced by heavy floods that have for two days been pounding Kanyabyoyo and Kyalanga villages.
The floods followed a half-day heavy down pour-bursting the banks of River Mukuku and Ssebwe on Monday.

Mr Ezra Turyahebwa, the Karusandara Sub-county chairperson, said about 20 homesteads have been affected and five schools including Karusandara Primary School and Karusandara SDA closed. He said authorities are compiling data to establish the damage.
“Many places in (Karusandara) Sub-county are prone to floods and every time it rains we experience flooding,” Mr Turyahebwa said.

The flooding has rekindled memories of the May 2013 floods that hit various parts of Kasese District, during which at least 10 people died and properties worth billions of shillings destroyed.
A number of villages along the Nyamwamba river, especially Kanyaruboga, Katiri and the Kilembe Hospital Nurses village were eroded.
The floods that hit the district in 2013 washed away bridges along various rivers, which up to-date have not been reconstructed.
“The rains have now come and we are afraid of a repeat of the 2013 disaster,” Mr Levi Muhindo, a resident near Nyamwamba river that flows through Kasese Municipality, said.

Warning
According to Augustine Koli, the Kasese District environment officer, people living along River Nyamwamba need to be extra cautious as the river could burst its banks, considering the increased rate of rainfall in the area.
He also advised that the district had formulated bye-laws on top of government policies seeking to stop environmental degradation, a major cause of flooding.
