Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL) chief executive officer Harrison Mutikanga has refuted claims by a parliamentary committee that the agency procured a consultant in an uncompetitive process to supervise works at Karuma hydropower project.

UEGCL, according to a source who declined to be named because he is not authorised to speak for the agency, got all necessary approvals from the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority and Energy ministry.

In its report, which is now before Parliament, the committee also suggested that government investigates circumstances under which UEGCL procured AF Consult.

“Let them probe and we shall give them the right information,” Mr Mutikanga said, highlighting that they have all the information in regard to procurement of the consultant.

UEGCL is a government–owned company that in 2002 concessioned the Kira and Nalubaale hydropower plants in Jinja and will also own the 600MW Karuma and the 183MW Isimba hydropower plants.
The Karuma project, however, has been shrouded in controversy with claims of shoddy works.
