PARLIAMENT:
The race for Deputy Speaker for the 10th Parliament Thursday intensified with State Minister for Planning and Member of Parliament for Ndorwa West Mr David Bahati joining the crowded contest.

Mr Bahati submitted his letters of interest to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission for preliminary screening before they are filed with the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) for final vetting.

Mr Bahati will, however, have to first resign as Minister as the current Rules of Procedure bar Ministers from running for either Speaker or Deputy Speaker.

Mr Bahati’s nomination brings the number of NRM MPs interested in the Deputy Speaker’s position to five. Other NRM MPs campaigning for the slot are Hamson Obua (Ajuri County), Jovah Kamateeka (Mitooma Woman MP), Monica Amoding (Kumi Woman MP-elect) and Abbas Agaba (Kitagwenda county MP-elect).

Mr Bahati said years of experience as vice chairman of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus during the 9th Parliament make him a suitable candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker position.

“In my years as the Vice-Chairman of the Caucus-which is a mini-Parliament with over 260 members-I gained enough experience in engaging members and in putting the welfare of MPs critical issues,”Mr Bahati said.
