Tororo DEO cautions teachers on absenteeism

Tororo District education officer has warned teachers against absenteeism despite getting salary promptly.

Mr Yonah Doya, while addressing a meeting of head teachers at Rock View School in Tororo Municipality at the weekend, said irregular attendance by teachers has affected academic performance as seen in the previous Primary Leaving Examinations results.

“It is on record that many teachers have resorted to doing personal businesses, including money lending and boda boda riding in Tororo Town yet they continue to draw salary,” Mr Doya said.

He added that efforts are being made to gather proper evidence to discipline the implicated teachers.
“We are going to identify such defiant staff during inspection and monitoring, it’s just a matter of time,” he warned.

Survey report
The meeting was meant to disseminate a survey report on teacher’s availability in school and management of class registers which indicated that most headteachers are never at school and that this gives room for teachers to report on duty late and leave early.
