KAMPALA. The sixth season of the popular Friday Night Lights (FNL) tournament will finally get underway this Friday at YMCA.
This is after FNL, the property owners of the pre-season fun tournament, reached an agreement on Monday with Kinetic Management Group (KMG) the organizers of the previous editions to hold one event.
This paved way for yesterday’s launch with sponsors Castle Lite committing more than Shs100m to this year’s event.
Spark TV, a sister channel to NTV, has also chipped in and will telecast games live every Friday throughout the tournament’s six-week duration.
FNL vs Lites Up saga
FNL had last week threatened to go ahead with their event after KMG opted out of the previous arrangement to create a new product named Lites Up.
This was despite Fuba’s directive that they could not do so as their event clashed with the KMG-organized Lites Up.
But following talks that concluded on Monday, the tournament will now go ahead albeit having been reduced from the usual eight, to six weeks to pave way for the league season that starts April 16.
“Over the years, FNL has experienced tremendous growth which resonates with our brand perfectly,” Julian Sentamu, brand manager stated at the launch in Bugolobi yesterday.
Because of the reduced time frame, eight teams are taking part in this year’s competition, down from 10 the previous season.
Team Amoding, the only women’s team taking part this time, are the defending champions.
