KAMPALA.

Following the strike of non-teaching staff that has paralysed operations at public universities, Makerere University and Kyambogo universities have extended opening dates.

Makerere University, which was supposed to open on August 6 has pushed the date to 13 of the same month, while Kyambogo has postponed the opening to August 15 as they try to find solutions to the striking staff.

The first year students who usually report to university a week earlier for orientation purposes will now report on the same date with continuing students.

Statements from both institutions confirmed the developments.

The background
The strike which started last week stems from failure by government to honour its promise to pay salary arrears to non-teaching staff in all public universities.
Last year, non-teaching staff went on strike again paralysing day to day running of all public universities.

To persuade them to end the strike, president Museveni in a letter dated 3rd September, 2015 said “the arrears arising out of non-payment of enhanced salaries due to non-teaching staff for the financial year 2015/2016 be paid together with the enhanced salaries in financial year 2016/2017.”

Public Universities Non-Teaching Staff Executives Forum chairman Mr Jackson Betihamah, said the situation is still “bitter” and they are not ready to give up.
He said ministry of finance which is supposed to clear their enhancement arrears is silent.
