It is always easier to blame other people for your problems than to take responsibility for them.
In Uganda, for instance, even areas that were not directly affected directly by more recent insurgency as was the case in northern Uganda, tend to blame “Uganda’s turbulent past” for their poverty. That past wars affected development cannot be denied. But despite those obstacles, many enterprising people are actually thriving.
There are many lazy young men you find in the rural areas who do nothing but gamble and drink while their wives and children do everything to get food on the table. That has nothing to do with poverty or lack of opportunities. In the past, when I was growing up, it was an abomination to see a woman holding a hoe, and going to dig.
That was always a man’s job, and men were proud to be providing for their families. A woman’s job was to weed and harvest and cook. The young men of today do not want to dig, even when they have gardens. Instead they now resort to selling gardens or renting them to others to get money for their incessant drinking.
Unless people wake up from this dormancy and laziness, they will remain poor. Our young men simply do not want to get their hands dirty, and yet expect to eat. That is not how we were brought up. Hard work was respected. Let’s stop perpetuating the victim mentality.
