Over 2,000 mourners sendoff Obote’s sister

LIRA: The older sister of the former president of Uganda Dr Apollo Milton Obote has been laid to rest at her home in Lira District.

Maliam Apenyu, who was born in Akokoro, Apac District, died last week of natural causes aged 96 years.
She was buried at her home at British Corner village, Boroboro parish in Adekokwok Sub-county on Saturday. The colourful ceremony was attended by over 2,000 mourners drawn from different parts of the country and abroad.
The state minister for defence, Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo, who was the chief mourner, said the educated women are causing embarrassment to cultural leaders by failing to marry, and engaging in domestic violence most of the time.

The minister, who represented the Otikokin clan leader Mr Sam Engola, at the ceremony, further blamed educated women for destroying marriage institutions.

“Look at Maliam we are bidding farewell to. She was not highly educated like our sisters today, but she stayed and died at the old age of 96 in her marriage, she did not embarrass our clan and her clan,” he added.

“But women of these days, especially the educated ones are bringing shame to us; they don’t want to get married.”
The Otikokin clan chief for Lira Municipality, Mr Bonny Oluma, said that many women of nowadays will never live up to old age and have white hair, because they behave like young girls.

The LC3 chairman of Ojwina Division in Lira Municipality, Mr Emmanuel Ebong Opeto, commended the deceased, saying Apenyu did not bring any shame to Oyima clan which she hailed from, and that she embraced and stayed in Otikokin clan where she was married until her death.
