Ex-LC3 boss arrested over impersonation

Malaba- Police in Malaba have arrested former LC3 chairperson of Mazimasa Sub-county in Butaleja District over allegations of masquerading as a government spy.

The Bukedi regional police spokesperson, Mr Sowali Kamulya, said Mr John Mutengo was arrested on Sunday after residents reported the case at Malaba Police Station.
“We have arrested him and investigations are ongoing,” Mr Kamulya said.

He said preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect had, by false pretence, extorted money from youth totalling to Shs1.7m in exchange for jobs in security agencies.

Mr Kamulya said the accused has been evading arrest, adding that he even abandoned his residence in Obore Cell in Malaba Town Council after realising that police were looking for him.

According to a source that works in the district Internal Security Officer’s office, but preferred anonymity, Mr Mutengo one time worked with the DISO’s office in Butaleja as an informer but he was suspended.

“We heard the same reports that he used to extort money from youth for jobs in police during recruitment,” the source said.

The source added that the suspect had also assured the youth that he was well –connected with highly placed officers in the police force.

Police said the suspect is to be charged with obtaining money by false pretence and impersonation.
