Amudat. The position of vice chairperson for Amudat District has remained vacant because none of the councillors has the required academic qualifications for it.
“To qualify for the seat of the district vice chairperson, a councillor must have qualification similar to those of LC5 chairpersons and MPs; that’s Senior Six level and above, which all my councillors don’t have,” the LC5 chairperson, Mr Francis Kiyonga, said after his swearing-in on Monday.
He said the position would remain vacant until an eligible candidate is identified.
Sources told Saturday Monitor that out of the eight councillors, only three have the qualifications for the position but they are not Mr Kiyonga’s supporters.
Verify academic papers
However, Mr Kiyonga said the academic papers of the said councillors needed to be properly verified and evaluated.
While addressing the council, Mr Kiyonga said education, poor health system and reconciliation are his priorities during his tenure.
The former MP in the 8th Parliament said the district performs poorly in national school examinations and maternal health. According to Mr Kiyonga, results of the 2015 Primary Leaving Examinations for Amudat showed only one pupil in Division One, which he said is unacceptable.
He also appealed to parents to send their children to school, adding that the council will pass a by-law to ensure all children of school-going age enroll for education.
