Elderly get Shs50,000 pay

BUNDIBUGYO- More than 100 elderly persons in Bundibugyo District have received Shs50,000 under the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment that seeks to uplift the standards of senior citizens.






The programme, which will first benefit people of Nyahuka Town Council, Bukonzo and Bubukwanga sub-counties, was launched on Tuesday by the out-going Gender state minister Kamanda Bataringaya with payments covering three months of April, March and May.






The scheme will benefit elderly persons above 65 years and not in active service or on government pension scheme.
The money will be channelled through Post Bank.






Mr Bataringaya said the programme, which has benefited 123,153 elderly persons in the last five years as a pilot project in 15 districts had been extended to more 20 districts including Bundibugyo.






More than Shs99b has been distributed in the last five years in the districts of Amudat, Apac, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kiboga, Kole, Kyankwanzi, Kyegegwa, Kyenjonjo, Moroto, Nakapiripirit, Napak, Nebbi, Yumbe and Zombo.






“We have recorded success stories and testimonies of how this programme has changed lives of older persons in the 15 pilot districts and we have received several missions from different parts of the country,” Mr Bataringaya said.
The grant provides a grant of Shs25,500 every month for persons above 65 years and above but 60 years in the case of those living in the Karamoja sub-region.
