Mabirizi promises free child healthcare

In Summary

Independent presidential candidate Joseph Mabirizi has said all children below nine years will be treated free of charge, should Ugandans elect him president next month.

He said his administration would start by rehabilitating hospitals as well as stocking and staffing them, since currently many are dilapidated and have insufficient drugs.

While addressing rallies in Kampala city and Wakiso District on Tuesday, Mr Mabirizi said he would get money to finance this by eradicating corruption.

“When an expectant woman goes to a hospital to deliver, she will find all that she requires in place. When the child is delivered, it will be entitled to free medical services until the age of nine,” said Mr Mabirizi.

Going with the National Population and Housing Census 2014 provisional results, there are 9.5 million children below the age of 10. If they were all to fall ill and each needed Shs20,000 for one week’s consultation fee, it would add up to Shs190.244 billion or 14.9 per cent of the Health ministry’s 2015/16 fiscal year budget.

Mr Mabirizi said Uganda loses a lot more through corruption, which the World Bank once estimated at $300 million (Shs1 trillion) annually.

The joint presidential candidate urged the people to vote him, saying he has their interests at heart.
However, some of the people at the rally venues were heard asking who he was. This was due to the lack of mobilisation to sensitise the community before Mr Mabirizi arrived.
