KAMPALA. Uganda made home advantage count as they tallied 215 medals en route to winning the inaugural Cana Zone III Championships that climaxed on Sunday at Kampala International School (Kisu), Bukoto.
With the Ugandan team of over 60 swimmers divided into two; Squids (146 medals and 3,244 points) and Merlins (69 medals 2,266 points), the hosts mostly competed against themselves in a meet that attracted 70 participants from four visiting countries.

“It’s a challenge that Kenya and some countries we invited didn’t come but South Africa gave us lots of credibility,” Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) general secretary Moses Mwase, noted.
Uganda’s senior swimmers have come under criticism for struggling against counterparts from other countries but captain Avice Meya, 20, and Ronald Daisuke Ssegwanyi, 22, exonerated the group by topping the girls’ and boys’ ‘17 and over’ age categories respectively.

Siegfred Katumwa and Katherine Bowmaker also topped the ‘12 and under’ age category. “Everything we achieved in these three days was because of hard work.
The competition was stiff against the South Africans (63 medals) and Tanzanians (39 medals), especially in the relays,” Kasujja, who was also delighted with Katrinah Ssangalyambogo’s new personal best (3:14.32) in the 200 Individual Medley, said.
