MBARARA- The Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, has warned that attempts by any candidate to impose themselves on the people in the 20016 elections will result in chaos.
“I appeal to everybody to ensure this becomes a credible election, anyone who will try to get power fraudulently, through crooked methods like intimidation, people will say no and this may result in violence,” Dr Rugunda said.
Dr Rugunda said the essence of elections is to consolidate peace and stability but not for people to fight their own wars or punish others for taking a different political position.
Dr Ruganda, who was speaking at a silver jubilee to celebrate the marriage of Lt Col Fred Kateizi Zakye and Ms Ann Giramata Zakye in Nkokonjeru, Mbarara District on Saturday, said government will ensure peace.
Dr Rugunda, however, urged the public not to leave the task of ensuring peaceful elections to only government and security organs but actively participate in the process.
The Prime Minister’s remarks followed Anglican Archbishop Stanley Ntagali’s concern about what he called the animosity being exhibited in campaigns.
Speaking at the same function, the Archbishop referred to the Ntungamo incident where supporters of President Museveni fought with those of Mr Amama Mbabazi recently.
He urged Ugandans to love one another. “When people have no love, they behave like animals, lose hope and confidence, Ugandans should love one another as we go to these elections to have a better society and nation,” said Archbishop Ntagali.
He challenged the young generation not to tag marriage on status and riches but love.
He said most marriages are in shambles due lack of love. He hailed the Zakyes for sticking together. Lt. Col Zakye works in the directorate of procurement, UPDF.
