Health Ministry rules out Ebola in Mubende

Kampala- Blood samples drawn from two patients admitted to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital with a strange illness last week, have tested negative for all contagious heamorrhagic fevers.

According to the Director General Health services, Dr Jane Aceng, the blood samples were tested at the Uganda Virus Research Institute and they all tested negative for strains of Ebola, yellow fever and Marburg.

“Results returned negative for all heamorrhagic fevers and we are still running others tests to establish the cause of the illness,” Dr Aceng told Daily Monitor.
However, she noted that one patient had died of severe anemia after spending three days in isolation at the hospital. “The patient was brought to hospital bleeding and in shock, doctors tried to save his life but in vain,” Dr Aceng said.

Earlier, the senior hospital administrator, Mr Louis Muhindo Ngobi, said the two patients had been admitted with signs related to those of Ebola and Marburg.

Dr Aceng said the other patient had improved and had stopped bleeding two days back.
