Alebtong NRM boss held over murder

ALEBTONG: A National Resistance Movement boss in Alebtong District is being detained at Lira Central Police Station over alleged murder. The suspect was arrested at a bar located on Mama Miria Road in Lira Town on Friday evening. It is alleged that the suspect and several others who are still at large, assaulted and tortured five people on the eve of February 18, 2016 general elections. The incident reportedly happened at Aput Trading Centre, Omee Parish, Amugu Sub-county in Alebtong District.

When asked, North Kyoga regional police commander, Mr John Peter Ematu, claimed ignorance of the matter. “I don’t know anything yet about it; you know some of these arrests are done at a district level,” he said via phone on Sunday.
Mr Ematu then referred this newspaper to Lira District Police Commander, Mr Ezra Tugume Ezra, who confirmed that the suspect was in their custody pending the next cause of action.

“I see the person here, but it is the region investigating the matter,” Mr Tugume said.

The people who were assaulted included Mr Leo Ouni, Mr Emmanuel Odongo, Mr George Aketa, Mr Kizito Acir, and Mr Haruna Ogwal. After the incident, one of the victims Mr Aketa was reportedly rushed to Alanyi Health Center III in critical condition before being referred to Alebtong Health Centre IV where he died hours later.

It is also alleged that the suspect and others on the same night broke into a shop belonging to Awany Lim Akaka, and made away with salt, soap and other items. The case was then reportedly first recorded at Amugu police post under SD Ref: 09/18/02/2016.

During the burial of Aketa, a doctor from Alebtong Health Center IV confirmed the death was caused by internal bleeding as a result of internal injuries he sustained.

The charge that was being prepared at Alebtong Central Police Station was then reportedly amended from assault to murder under CRB 58/2016.
