KAMPALA. The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje has been selected to sit on a committee that gives joint decrees on Muslim affairs in the world.
Sheikh Mubajje now becomes one of the 21 members of the Supreme Council Muslim Leaders (SCML) an influential assembly of Muslim scholars that declares universal binding Fatwas (Islamic decrees or declarations) guiding on Islamic matters.
Mufti Mubajje’s appointment was in Cairo Egypt where Muftis from across the globe converged at the country’s Grand Mufti’s office a last week.
The appointment means one of Uganda’s top Muslim leader will now join the rest in researching about the authenticity of the teachings of Islam.
Mubajje on appointment
Addressing a congregation of Muslims at King Fahd Primary School, Kampala Sheikh Mubajje said the council will be key in the global fight against religious based terrorism.
“The council will be a pillar in countering fake and controversial fatwas issued by unauthentic clerics, seeking to fight wars of personal interests,” he said.
According to Hajji Nsereko Mutumba, the council will be countering such self-intended declarations that have been the source of chaos in most Islamic states.
He said Mufti’s appointment shows “the gold and pool of knowledge we have as Ugandans” deserving to tap and make use of it.
About Council
The Supreme Council Muslim Leaders [SCML] is constituted by Muftis from around the world. It is an equivalent of a Papal conclave constituted by a College of Cardinals and chaired by the Bishop of Rome.
Unlike for Papal conclave, the SCML is chaired by a Mufti appointed annually at the council’s general meeting. The newly appointed SCML is currently chaired by the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Sheikh Dr Shauki Ibrahim Allama.
