Village NRM boss burnt in own house

By IVAN KIMBOWA

RAKAI- Police in Rakai District are investigating circumstances under which unidentified people attempted to burn down the National Resistance Movement chairperson for Koza village in Kakuuto Sub-county in his house.

Mr John Arinda escaped with severe injuries after the attack on his house on Sunday.

His neigbours said they heard him make an alarm and when they came out to help, his house was already up in flames.

Mr Maurice Niyonzima, the officer in charge of Mutukula Police Station, confirmed the incident, but said no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Mr Arinda was saved by his neighbours and is currently receiving treatment at Kakuuto Health Center IV as we investigate the cause of the incident,” Mr Niyonzima said in a telephone interview on Tuesday.
However, Mr Steven Ssebunya, the chairperson Kakuuto Sub-county, linked the incident to the persistent land wrangles and local politics in the area the victim has been involved in.

“For a very long time, Mr Arinda has been reporting to authorities illegal entrants from neighbouring countries, especially Tanzania, who have been sneaking into the country,” Mr Ssebunya said.
