Residents demonstrate over poor health unit

Bugiri- More than 200 residents of Busowa Town Board in Bugiri District took to the streets of the town on Wednesday to protest the poor service delivery and the state of affairs at Busoga Health Centre II.

Led by the area local council representative, Mr George Kasadha, and one Thomas Okudumu, the residents demanded that the district authorities explain the lack of drugs and regular absenteeism of health workers at the facility.

“We have two medical workers who are always absent and when they report, they give drugs to a few and claim that the drugs are finished,” Mr Okudumu said.

Worrying situation
The residents also said the facility is run downwith glass panes replaced by paper cards, the ceiling caved in and the facility reduced to being a haven for bats.

“The facility has no functional pit-latrine and it has since become a house for bats yet it is where drugs are stored,” Mr Joseph Waibi, a resident, said.

Mr Kasadha said he had taken up the matter with the district authorities, but had not yet received any response. “I asked that it be elevated to a health centre III, but I am yet to get a formal response from the authorities,” Mr Kasadha said.

Efforts to reach the Bugiri District health officer, Dr Stephen Kiirya Bulolo, were futile, but the district health educator, Mr Mesearch Balidawa, acknowledged the problems of the facility.

He, however, cited lack of funds and failure by the Uganda Medical Stores to provide adequate drugs as a major challenge and cause of the worrying state at the facility.
